    Noise Survey

    Hearing impairment and damage is a form of workplace injury and so as an employer, particularly in loud manufacturing environments, assessing the sound environment of the workplace is vital. The overall aim of an occupational noise survey is to be able to assess the amount of noise or sound to which employees are exposed to whilst at their workplace.

    A noise survey is undertaken by a trained professional and will identify areas in the workplace where operators are exposed to noise levels above the:

    • lower Exposure Action Level (LEAL) (LEP, d) of 80 dB(A), with a limit of 135 dBC peak sound pressure.
    • upper Exposure Action Level (UEAL) (LEP, d) of 85 dB(A), with a limit of 137 dBC peak sound pressure.

    They will also:

    • identify octave band frequencies, peak sound pressure levels and personal daily noise exposure (expressed as an 8-hour time-weighted average ‘Lepd’).
    • provide static octave, peak and Lepd area readings in all locations and personal dosimeter readings on specific personnel.
    • provide a detailed assessment of the suitability of any personal hearing protection provided by the company.
    • prepare noise maps of all machinery and operator workstations/areas.
    • give further recommendations on where noise levels, and employees exposure to noise, can be reduced under the requirements of the Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
