As it is difficult to identify asbestos, due to it often being mixed with other materials, the only way to confirm it’s presence is through an asbestos survey. There are a few different types of survey that we can carry out for you:
General Survey
This involves taking samples of any materials suspected of containing asbestos to analyse at a UKAS (NAMAS) accredited laboratory. Following this, a detailed written report showing all asbestos installations and the types detected would be compiled, along with a detailed specification to comply with current asbestos regulations and associated codes of practice.
Management Surveys
Management surveys often involve minor intrusive work and some disturbance. The extent will vary between premises and will depend on what is reasonably practicable for individual properties (e.g. type of building, nature of construction, accessibility etc.). These surveys will include an assessment of the condition of the various asbestos materials within the building and their ability to release fibres into the air if they are disturbed. This will give a good initial guide to the priority for managing asbestos in the workplace, identifying the materials, their condition and location, including photographs & maps.
Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys
We can undertake these surveys to locate all the asbestos in the building as far as is reasonably practicable. It is a disruptive and intrusive survey which may need to penetrate all parts of the building structure. Aggressive inspection techniques will be needed to lift carpets and tiles, break through walls, ceilings, cladding and partitions, or open up floors. Controls would be put in place to prevent the spread of debris, which may include asbestos. These surveys would only be conducted in unoccupied areas to minimise risks to the public or employees on the premises. Ideally, the building should not be in service and all furnishings should be removed.
